Window FAQs

  • How Much Does A Window Cost?
The fastest way to determine your window cost is to measure your window and to send those measurements to our team or visit us in store. From there, we can quickly determine the most affordable window cost for your project.
  • What Colors Are Available?
Windows are available in nearly limitless colors, but it depends entirely on the style, manufacturer, and finish. White is certainly the most common, but black has seen growing popularity in recent years. Wood windows can be painted or stained many colors, and vinyl windows can be ordered in a variety of colors depending on the manufacturer. Speak with one of our window experts today to get a full list of color specs for your window type.
  • What is Actual Size vs. Rough Opening?
A typical window frame has a header across the top, a sill plate across the bottom, and vertical trimmers on either side. Because these take up extra space, a 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall window may be listed as 3' – 4’, but the actual window measurements will be slightly less than this to accommodate the installation system. The difference between rough opening and actual window size will vary by manufacturer.
  • How Do I Measure For My Window?
The easiest way to measure your window is to take three measurements horizontally (bottom, middle, top), and three measurements vertically (left, center, and right). Take the smallest number of each measurement to ensure your best fit, and remember to measure from the bottom of the sill and the inside of the window jam.
  • How Do I Read Window Measurements?
Windows measurements should always be width first, then height. For example a 4’x5’ window would be 4 feet wide by 5 feet tall.
  • What’s Better: Wood Windows or Vinyl Windows?
This is a hotly debated topic and as with most things, it depends on your project. We recommend that you speak with one of our experts to get the most detailed recommendation. However, generally speaking wood is best for longevity, visual appeal, colors and painting, and historic homes. Vinyl is fantastic for low cost materials and installation, DIYers, and low maintenance.
